GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Abrasive--Substance added to soap to gently scrub and cleanse.

Additive--Ingredient added to create desired affect. Oils, moisturizers, etc.

Antibacterial--Herbs that fight and destroy bacteria.

Antibiotic--Inhibits the growth of germs, bacteria and harmful microbes.

Anti-fungal--Agents act against and destroy various fungi.

Anti-inflammatory--Herbs with this ability reduce inflammation in the body without acting directly on the cause of the inflammation.

Antimicrobial--Help the body destroy microbes by affecting their growth and multiplication.

Antioxidant--they are substances that neutralize highly reactive free radical oxygen molecules, which cause cell damage throughout the body. Antioxidant herbs counteract the negative effects of oxidation on body tissues.

Antiseptic--Bacteria inhibitor to prevent growth, or relieve affected area, inhibits the growth and development of microorganisms. (lavender is a natural antibacterial agent).

Antiviral--An herb or drug which is used to destroy or inhibit growth and reproduction of viruses.

Aroma--Specific taste or scent.

Astringent--Substance that reduces the pores, providing a smoother surface.

Blended--A combination of fragrance oils, herbal extracts or other ingredients combined to create an exact scent.

Botanical name--A botanical name is a formal scientific name given to plants by International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN).

Calmative--An herb that has a mild sedative or tranquilizing effect.

Carrier--An herb or substance which is added to a formula or mixture of other herbs to aid in the distribution of the medicine to the proper location in the body or to enhance the effect of the other principle ingredients (example: Olive Oil)

Citric Acid--a weak organic acid, it is a natural preservative and is used to add an acidic or sour taste to foods and soft drinks.

Detoctin--A liquid preparation obtained by boiling medicinal plant parts in water and then extracting the solid parts by straining the preparation.

Deodorant--An herb or substance that either removes, destroys, masks or suppresses odor.

Detergent--Cleansers made of distillates other than animal fat.

Disinfectant--An agent that cleanses infection by destroying or inhibiting the activity of disease-producing microorganisms.

Emollient--An herb or substance that is used externally to soften and soothe irritated skin, inflamed tissue or mucus membranes. (almond oil, honey etc.)

Essential Oils--Fragrant oil produced from various plants and herbs, used to create a desired scent.(lavender essential oil)

Extract--A preparation obtained from soaking an herb, plant part, or substance in an appropriate solvent, usually alcohol, water, or glycerin, then removing the solid parts by straining, evaporating some or all of the solvent, and adjusting the result to prescribed standards.

Fatty Oils--Fatty oil is non-volatile oil composed of fatty acids usually a plant or animal origin.

Fixative--A substance used for the preservation of tissue or cell substance. Also known as fixing or binding agent.

Fragrance Oil--Synthetically produced oil that reproduces the scent of the natural essential oil.

Gingivitis--Inflammation/infection of the gums.

Hand-milling--Making soap by grating the base soap, mixing with water, and added ingredients to be molded into quality soaps.

Herbs--Plant used for medicines, aromatherapy and cooking. A food or fragrance that has a soft stem, whose flowers can be dried and ground . (Basil, rosemary, etc.)

Hexylene glycol-Specially Denatured Alcohol

Homeopathy--200 year old form of natural medicine.

Hydration--The balance of fluids in the skin and body. Additives used to maintain moist, firm skin. (Chamomile, rose oil, etc)

Infusion--A solution or extract obtained by steeping or soaking herbs (usually in water).

Insect Repellent--A substance applied to skin or clothing to discourage insects from landing. (*Wikipedia-[7]'A 2006 published study found in both field and cage studies.)

Insecticide--A toxic substance used to kill insects.

Melt and Pour--Method used to create handmade soap by melting soap base and pouring base into molds.

Mica--a pure silica mineral used in body care and cosmetics.

Relaxant--Tends to relax and relieve tension, especially muscular tension.

Saponins--Naturally occurring surfactants form soapy lather when dissolved in water.

Sedative--Herbs are used to relieve irritability and promote calm, relax and tranquil feelings.

Soap--Created by saponification: vegetable or animal fat are combined with alkali to produce soap and glycerin.

Soap base-- Melt and pour soap prior to the melting and introduction of additives.

Saponification--Chemical process which soap is created by adding animal or vegetable fats to alkali to produce soap and glycerin.

Spice--Obtained from the seeds, buds or bark of tropical plants to provide a strong aromatic substance.(Cinnamon, cloves, etc.)

Stimulant--Substance or scent used to temporarily increase functional activity of tissues.

Sunscreen--(sunblock, suntan lotion) a lotion, spray or topical product that absorbs or reflects the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Tannins--Are naturally occurring phenolic compounds. They are astringent in nature and used to bind and precipitate proteins.

Tincture--A solution of the active principal of an herb in alcohol.

Titanium Dioxide--this natural mineral is used in food & cosmetics as a pigment. It also contains high reflective abilities which help to repel UV rays.

Volatile Oil--Volatile Oils are those plant-derived oils which are totally volatile or evaporating in nature. They are highly aromatic in nature and are used in the perfume industry.

Vulnerary--Any herb that is used in treating fresh cuts and wounds, usually used as a poultice.

Zinc Oxide--a natural mineral used as a pigment or fixative in food, cosmetics, dentistry and more. It has a water barrier abilities and also absorbs UVA & UVB rays.
